Which Rental Car Is Right for Your Belize Trip?
Economy Jeep, family SUV, 4x4 truck or 15-seat van? Match the vehicle to your itinerary and group size.
We get this question every day, so here is the honest answer from the people who hand over the keys.
Couples and solo travellers: Jeep Patriot or Compass
At US$45–60 a day the Patriot and Compass are the best value in Belize. They are compact, easy to park in San Ignacio, and fine for every paved highway. Pick the 4WD versions if you plan on Mountain Pine Ridge or the road to Caracol.
Families of five: Equinox, Cherokee or 4Runner
Five seats, four to five suitcases, and a higher driving position for the speed bumps. The newer Chevrolet Equinox (2018–2021) is our most popular family car.
Families of seven: Expedition, Durango, Yukon or Suburban
Three rows of seats and real luggage space. Remember that with seven people on board, luggage room shrinks. If you have seven people and seven bags, the GMC Yukon or Suburban is the one.
Adventure: Wrangler, 4Runner TRD or Tacoma
Unpaved roads to jungle lodges, river crossings in the wet season, and the climb to Rio On Pools. The Jeep Wrangler 4x4 is the icon; the Toyota Tacoma is the workhorse.
Groups: Ford Transit
Twelve passengers with luggage or fifteen without. Wedding parties, church groups and dive teams love it.
